We were recently asked to help Costain with a site on the edge of the River Stour. The scope was to clear vegetation to allow Costain to build an access/egress haul road and compound area so refurbishment works can be carried out on a railway bridge.

There was a mixture of ground vegetation, brambles, nettles and ivy, as well as a mixture of semi mature trees including hawthorn and blackthorn.

Site surveys were carried out to decide on the correct machinery for the works. We used our fantastic Fen Contracts Bandit 1590 tracked chipper, our PC 138 excavator, the Bomford fixed tooth excavator/mulching head, 5 tine rotating excavator grapple, and 2 of our experienced NPTC/CPCS skilled chainsaw operators/machine operators.

The job took three days to complete after ecology checks were carried out and approved.
There was no human contact with the felled material which improved safety, reducing fatigue and limiting HAV’s.

Everything was handled with our 5 time rotating excavator grapple and fed into the Bandit 1590 tracked chipper. All ground vegetation was mulched using the fixed tooth mulching head, again resulting in no human contact improving safety, reducing fatigue and limiting HAV’s.

Correct exclusion zones were set up. Wood chip and logs were stock piled for the landowner to use when required.

As you can see from the pictures this was a good challenge due to tight time scales and a very enjoyable and satisfying job to complete.
